Nobile di Montepulciano wine is grown around the town of Montepulciano, southeast of Siena and in the eastern part of Tuscany (this area is actual part of the Chianti zone of Colli Senesi). Nobile di Montepulciano wine is named after the town of the same name and has been historically thought of as the wine made only for nobility. Wine has been made in this region since the 8th century AD.

MontepulcianoNobile di Montepulciano wine was the first DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita which means denomination of verified and guaranteed origin, and represents the highest classification of Italian Wines). In Tuscany there are six D.O.C.G. wines altogether: Brunello di Montalcino, Carmignano, Chianti, Chianti Classico, Vernaccia di San Gimignano as well as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Nobile di Montepulciano wine is viewed as one of Italy’s best, with 60-80% of the wines made from Prugnolo (sangiovese), 10-20% Canaiolo, and up to 20% of other varieties.

In 1989, a new Rosso di Montepulciano DOC (red of Montepulciano) was created. It is made in the same area, using the same grape varieties as Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG wine. This change will give the producers the option to classify wines which may have been intended to for Nobile di Montepulciano instead to Rosso di Montipulciano DOC. It is thought that this should insure the high quality of the Nobile di montepulciano DOCG wine.
